2015 WSMS Race Stories

WSMS XC

Good Afternoon WSMS XC Parents/Athletes

Our meet yesterday was a huge success. Thank you to our LHS XC team that helped with the finish line and on the course as monitors. Huge thanks to Ryan Brands and Grant Tiff for riding the bike to lead the runners through the course! It was nice to see the State Runner-Up Team working so hard to support our WS runners.

Our 8th grade band students decided to have an impromptu band performance before the 7th grade boys race. They played the Lovejoy Fight Song and it created tons of excitement for the runners and the spectators. Great Job, boys!!

I felt that our runners were focused on their race and they looked good on the course. Celebration Park is a perfect location to run a race and I was proud of the fast times posted for our 1st meet. We will be able to compare times on December 1st when we race there again.

Click here for the results, so please take a minute to look and celebrate the success with your son/daughter. The runners are working hard in practice and yesterday's meet has fired them up to stay on course. The 7th and 8th grade girls have Williams MS girls in their site for next week. That's intrinsic motivation at it's finest.

  • 7B-1st place
  • 7G-2nd place (notice the point difference ... 1 point)

  • 8G-2nd place

Good Afternoon WSMS XC Parents/Athletes,

Today was our Jesuit XC Classic at Norbuck Park. We had a full morning of races and the weather was beautiful. Our WS runners were great today! The course was tough with two steep hills, but our runners were on a mission to perform. I'm so proud of all of them. A huge thank you to our booster club for providing water and fruit! Another huge thank you to Camille Joiner and Carey Tiff for supporting our runners today!

Our middle school boys ran at 11:00 and there were over 420 runners in their race. Brady Laboret came out strong and he fought hard to finish 3rd place. Trevor Malik, George Bentley, Whitson Bedell, and Sam Rouse finished out the top 5 for the boys team. The boys team was missing Grant Guellar and we missed seeing him compete.

Our middle school girls ran at 11:20 and there were over 350 runners in their race. Erika Jenkins, Sadie Dale, and Lily McCutcheon looked so strong throughout the entire race and they posted great times. Sofia Estes, and Andee Richardson finished out the top 5 for the girls team. Our girls team was missing Madison DuBois and Reagan Matacale, two strong top team finishers for us.

WSMS XC

Good Afternoon WSMS XC Parents/Athletes,

I hope you are enjoying your weekend and gearing up for our 2nd week of school. Friday was our 1st cross country meet at "The Buff" in Haltom City and it was an excited day. Our LHS varsity boys team won, LHS varsity girls placed 6th, JV boys won, and the JV girls placed 2nd. Our WS runners competed in the JV division and they represented Lovejoy well.

Cowtown Challenge:

Reagan Matacale (13:31) won the JV girls 3200 division. Reagan began the race and was pacing herself with the lead pack, but she quickly left them behind and led the race from the half mile mark to the finish. Erika Jenkins (14:33), 7th grader, placed 5th and Madison DuBois (14:47), 7th grade, was close behind in 9th place. Due to scoring issues, Erika and Madison were not included in the scoring. Erika and Madison spent most of their summer training at Celebration Park with the LHS cross country team and learning from the older runners. There were over 180 girls in this race and Erika and Madison had nerves of steel, picking off runners ahead of them and finishing strong. I'm so proud of their efforts and can't wait to see them race this season.

Next to finish was Lily McCutcheon, Heidi Fischer, Emily Piccirillo (ran as Carissa Dresser), Madeline Mancini, Madeline Sanders, Abi Carawan, Claire McFadden (finished 3 positions ahead of Lauren), and Lauren Motsney.

Grant Gueller (19:58) placed 12th in the JV boys 5000 division. Michael DesJardins and Shalin Mehta also represented WS in this race. This was an exciting race and finish because Lovejoy place 1st-8th. The top 5 runners from each school are counted for team scoring and a perfect score is 15. Coach Christensen and Coach Kelly have created two strong boys teams in varsity and JV.

I feel that cross country is a true team sport for athletes, spectators, and parents. Cross country meets are filled with positive excitement and everyone cheers for everyone. A few examples: Mr. DuBois was jumping up and down cheering for our Lovejoy runners and he was encouraging all runners as they ran past him, Reagan and Lily carried a JV runner after she fell in the 5000m race, and the LHS runners were giving course tips to our WS runners before they ran.

Thank you to all the parents that woke up early to get your son/daughter to school Friday morning and for attending the meet. Special thanks to the booster club for providing healthy snacks to the runners after the race. We can't do it without your support!
